How to Use Zebra StageNow for Device Configuration and Updates
Keeping your Zebra Android devices up-to-date is crucial for optimal performance and security. In this guide, we'll walk you through using Zebra's StageNow application—a powerful tool that allows you to create barcodes for quick and efficient device configuration and updates. Whether you need to set up Wi-Fi, install applications, or perform OS updates, StageNow makes it easy to manage multiple devices in your warehouse or distribution center.
Overview of StageNow
StageNow is Zebra's staging solution that creates barcodes to assist in device configuration. It's primarily used for:
- Setting up Wi-Fi
- Configuring device settings
- Installing applications
- Performing OS updates
- Enrolling in MDM
However, it offers a wide range of additional functionalities.
Components of StageNow
StageNow consists of two components:
- The PC Administrator Tool – This is used to create configuration barcodes.
- The Mobile Client – Pre-installed on Zebra Android devices, this client scans the configuration barcodes generated by the administrator tool.
Getting Started with StageNow
Let's take a closer look at the StageNow Administrator program. This program is available as a free download from Zebra's website. Upon installation, you'll be required to set up a password. Important note: There is no way to recover a lost password. If you lose it, you'll need to reinstall the application, and any unsaved projects will be lost.
Roles in StageNow
There are two roles within StageNow:
- Operator: Can generate barcodes for existing, published StageNow profiles without needing a password.
- Administrator: Can create and modify staging profiles. Most companies typically use the Administrator role.
Creating a New Profile
We've logged in as an Administrator and will now create a new profile to set up Wi-Fi on a device.
- Set the MX Level: First, select the MX level from the drop-down box. This level must be equal to or lower than the MX level on the target device. To find the MX level of your device, open the StageNow client, click on the three dots in the upper right corner, and select "View Client Info." Focus on the first part of the number displayed (e.g., 11.9).
- Choose the Wizard or Expert Mode: Ensure you choose the correct MX level since you cannot change it once past this screen. If set too high, a new profile will need to be created. For this example, we'll choose "Expert Mode," which offers maximum flexibility.
- Name the Profile: Enter a name for the profile—remember, no spaces allowed.
- Configure the Profile: You'll see various options such as App Manager, File Manager, Power Manager, and more. For this demonstration, we'll select "Wi-Fi" and add it twice to the profile. This is because the first instance will be for adding a new network, and the second will be for connecting to it.
- Add a New Network: Enter the appropriate network information, including SSID, security type (e.g., WPA2), and passcode. Click "Continue."
- Connect to the Network: For the second Wi-Fi entry, select "Connect" and enter the SSID of the network you just added. Leave the encryption setting as "encrypted" and select "Complete Profile."
Generating and Testing Barcodes
You can choose between 1D or 2D barcode types. Most customer devices accept 2D, so that's generally the best choice. The difference between PDF417 and JS PDF417 depends on the Android version—use PDF417 for version 11 and below and JS PDF417 for version 11 and above.
After selecting your barcode type:
- Click "Test" to generate a barcode. You can scan it from the screen or print it out for scanning.
- Once tested, click "Publish." You can add instructions or additional information to appear on the final stage barcode.
- Save a copy of the stage barcode for future use.
Exporting the Profile
Lastly, it's wise to export the profile by choosing "Export for StageNow." This creates a backup copy in case you need to recreate it later.
